Our faith has long been grounded in the journey towards justice. We have sought to create communities that are mobilized towards changing the world. And yet, we know that the ideals of inclusion and justice that we espouse have not been met. How do we reconcile this? What joyful work is before us in this moment in our history? How do we continue to widen the circle of our concern and care so that we can live up to the values we claim?
The Unitarian Universalist Association Board of Trustees launched a Commission on Institutional Change in 2017. They were charged to conduct an audit of the power structures and analyze systemic racism and white supremacy culture within the Unitarian Universalist Association. They published their findings in a book called “Widening the Circle of Concern.” We will launch a study group in this book on the first Tuesday of March. This Sunday service will begin our collective exploration of the themes of this important text.
